Questions & answers

Umbraa, explained.

What is Umbraa? +
Umbraa is a native macOS menu bar app that dims every display below your Mac's minimum brightness, so the screen is comfortable to use in the dark. It's handy when you're watching something at night, reading in bed, or working late.
How is this different from just lowering my brightness? +
Even at its lowest setting, your Mac's backlight can still be too bright in a dark room. Umbraa adds an overlay that dims the display much further, and it can warm the color too.
Does it work with external monitors? +
Yes. Umbraa dims every connected display, including external monitors.
Can I warm the screen color? +
Yes. You can choose Neutral, Warm, or Red. Warm and red are easier on your eyes late at night and keep the screen from feeling harsh.
What is the sleep timer? +
Set a timer and Umbraa fades the screen to black when it runs out, so a bright screen doesn't wake you up if you fall asleep watching something.
Can Umbraa dim automatically at night? +
Yes. Turn on sunset-to-sunrise automation and Umbraa brings the dimming on at dusk and takes it off at dawn.
Does Umbraa collect any data? +
No. Umbraa does not collect, store, or send any personal data. There are no accounts, no analytics, and no tracking. You can read the full Privacy Policy.
Are there keyboard shortcuts? +
Yes. You can adjust dimming, toggle Umbraa, and start the sleep timer with keyboard shortcuts.
Does it launch at login? +
Yes, if you want. Umbraa can launch at login and pick up where you left off.
Where can I get Umbraa? +
Umbraa is available now on the Mac App Store for $3.99 in the US. Pricing varies by country.
